Alison’s Tip

A very common thing I hear from my clients are that their pets are not acting like they are in pain, when upon my physical examination it is clear to me they are in pain.  Pets can disguise pain very well and it may not be obvious to their owners that they are hurting.  Do not wait until your pet is crying or not using a limb to bring them into your veterinarian for care. The following are some subtle and obvious signs that your pet is hurting and should be seen by your veterinarian.

• Limping or not weight bearing on one of their limbs
• Excessive panting
• Restless and not able to get comfortable or sleep peacefully
• Increased heart rate
• Going on shorter walks and not wanting to go the same distances that they use
• Not jumping up on cabinets, beds, or other furniture that they use to with ease
• Hesitating to walk up the stairs
• Hiding
• Not greeting you at the door like they use to
• Whimpering or crying

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is all about love! It is a great time to teach our children about empathy for others. It is never to early to introduce them to community service and helping others. Something as simple as donating to a cause at your local grocery store or donating food to the local food bank is a wonderful way to create a teaching moment for your little ones.
