FF Tips For The Week…Is My Pet In Pain, Carrie’s Favorite Shoe Picks, and Seasonal Allergies And Children

Alison’s  Tip

As a small animal veterinarian I commonly hear my clients tell me my pet is limping but they are not in pain.  It is common to believe that if your pet is not crying or whimpering that they are not in pain.  This in fact is quite the opposite .  Pets do not always show overt signs of pain and it is important to be able to identify when they are uncomfortable and have them assessed by your veterinarian . The following are subtle signs of discomfort in your pet.

  • Panting
  • Limping
  • Reluctance to jump on furniture or go upstairs
  • Not wanting to go for their normal walks and play outside
  • Hiding in unusual places
  • Not eating
  • Not engaging in typical behaviors like running after you for a treat

Always have your pet evaluated by your veterinarian if any of these signs are noted.

Time Spring will be here before we know it and. Unfortunately, many children suffer from seasonal allergies. The reason for the spike in allergy flare-ups in spring is due to the blooming trees, plants and flowers. Pollen and other products of nature get carried by the wind and end up in our nose, eyes, and lungs. When this happens our immune system reacts to the foreign elements and releases histamine. Histamine causes swelling and mucus production in the nose, redness and tearing in the eyes, and itching.  More seriously, it can cause wheezing, excess mucus production, and swelling in the lungs. Make sure you have the tools you need to fight against allergies including antihistamines, decongestants, combination antihistamine/decongestants, and cromolyn nasal spray! It is important to plan ahead of time, especially if your child tends to wheeze. Speak to your doctor about a plan to fight against allergies before the season starts as it can be stressful for both you and your child.
