our incredible Portugal vacation

Freckles Go To Portugal

Words can’t even begin to describe the magic that is Portugal. A year ago, Katie said she wanted to go away for her 40th birthday. She asked what we thought about a Portugal vacation.

I have to be honest…

We travel some and take weekend trips here and there, but Portugal is another experience altogether! I had no idea where Portugal even was on the map! I knew it was in Europe but not much else. But I did know I was 100% in! So we began planning, never knowing how incredible this trip really was going to be!

First Stop: Douro Valley

We flew in to Lisbon and drove directly into wine country. We began our drive in through the valleys surrounded by breathtaking views of wineries.

Our hotel was, by far, the most unbelievable hotel I have ever stayed in.

We stayed at the Six Senses Resort. If you have the opportunity to visit Portugal, I highly recommend spending a few days here. It’s a newly renovated 19th century manor home. The stunning resort is situated high on a hill overlooking the vine covered hills of the Douro Valley and the river below. It boasts indoor swimming pools, a wine tasting room, and organic gardens. The resort also features a magnificent spa with incredible views and amenities, incredible rooms or villas, and unbelievable restaurants. Each morning, we woke to a breakfast spread that can only be described as a foodie’s paradise!

Did I mention this was the view from my bed? YEP!

Not to mention the Six Senses Resort has a heavy focus on protecting our environment. They produce and purify their own water on site to reduce the amount of water bottle waste.

It’s just an added touch that makes this resort so incredibly special and unique.

While we were visiting Douro valley, we took the most incredible boat ride down the Pinhao River Duoro. We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting wineries, which doesn’t need much explanation. Wine, cheese, amazing views, and one terrifying car ride up the mountain…

Back to Lisbon

After a few days in paradise, we jumped back in the car and headed back to Lisbon. We were all pretty sad to leave such an amazing place, but we didn’t yet realize how unbelievable the city of Lisbon is!

We stayed at TIVOLI AVENIDA which was in a perfect location and had the most amazing roof top bar. Not to mention we were across the street from Gucci and Louis Vuitton, which didn’t hurt 🙂

Be ready for some amazing sights and some incredible seafood. And bring your walking shoes! The hills are steep, but the sights are incredible.

More Adventures on Our Portugal Vacation

Portugal is known for their tiles and cork! If you have time, make sure to take a day trip to Sintra. The palaces are breathtaking. It is like being in a forbidden magical forest – I kid you not! It’s truly one of the most majestic places I have ever seen.
