Melted Crayon Pumpkins For Halloween

Sometimes I feel like super craft mom over here! We are not the craftiest family. However, we certainly try to be. And we always have fun while doing it. These melted crayon pumpkins really were so much fun to do with the kids.

Melted Crayon Art – A Twist on Traditional Halloween Pumpkins

Every year for Halloween, we do the typical pumpkin carving. But one year, we decided to change it up a bit. We wanted to make some decorations that were fun, different, and stood out on our front porches!

*Make sure to read through all of the steps first. When Katie and I attempted this DIY, we had a couple of set-backs. But with some perseverance, we figured it out!

Materials Needed:

  • Small or large white pumpkins (real or fake…we went with the fake ones from Michaels)
  • Tacky Glue (to glue down the crayons to the top of the pumpkin)
  • A box of crayons, all different colors
  • A really hot hair dryer
  • Newspaper, tablecloth, or something you can put underneath the project

Instructions:

  1. The first thing you need to do is take the paper off of the crayons. This is a bit tedious but it has to be done. Pro Tip: Make the kids do it!
  2. Break your crayons in half because you only need half for each pumpkin.
  3. Now, this step is the part we had to add in because our hair dryer wasn’t so strong. We tried to blow dry the crayons to make them melt but literally nothing was happening…I blame the crappy hair dryer. So we put the crayons in the microwave and melted them a bit. This extra step got the process started and made melting the crayons with the hair dryer easier.
  4. Glue the crayons to the top of the pumpkin. The pumpkins are round, so the crayons will fall off if you don’t do this step. Make sure you let the glue dry before trying to melt the crayons, or they will slip right off. Pro Tip: Let your kids pick their own colors. It’s also fun to teach your kids how to create a pattern with the colors.
  5. Now comes the hair dryer! I spent about a minute on each crayon and worked around the whole pumpkin. It was exciting for the kids to see all the wax melt and drip down. They totally got a kick out of it.
  6. After we were done, we let them dry for about 15 minutes. You could add glitter or anything else decorative if you want to be more creative. Draw on a scary face, or just leave them as is! I also think it would look super cool with a black pumpkin and neon crayons!

Next time, for sure!

  1. What a fun unique (and less messy) way to decorate a pumpkin! Might have to try this when my girls are a little older

  2. I love this idea and who would have though!?! I will have to get my pumpkin ready for some creative melting thank you!

  3. I live in the south, so I wonder if the hot sun would work just as well lol. Will definitely try this along with the black pumpkin/neon colors as well.

  4. This is such a great idea. Who doesn’t like melting colors. My twins love everything rainbow, so we are doing this.

  5. I love this! When my baby is a little older we’ll definitely be doing this. My husband and I love Halloween but giving a toddler a knife just doesn’t sit right with us, so I’m always happy to find non-carving pumpkin ideas!

    1. Thanks so much for following us:) This is definitely a bit safer than carving pumpkins. Enjoy and have fun !

  6. I love the idea of doing crafts with kids! I seriously ran out of paint when my daughter wanted to paint her pumpkin, this was a great idea to use because we have plenty of crayons around the house that we can use to do this awesome craft! Thanks!

  7. This is great unique idea. I may need to try this with my daughter next year who will be 2 then. She would love naming all the colors too.

  8. We painted pumpkins this year. Next year we are going to have to try the melted crayon effect. Looks wonderful and fun for the kids.

    1. Thanks so much for following us. We got the crayons a bit melted ahead of time with a candle and then used a very hot dryer.
